I celebrated the dirty thirty this month and of course I needed applicable over the top accessories so EVERYONE will know! Cake toppers are an easy cake accessory that elevates your party decor and can be totally customized. All you need is a cutting machine, bamboo skewers, card stock, and glue.

Supplies you will need
- 12″ long wood dowels in 3/16″ diameter
- Cardstock
- Super glue or glue gun
- Cutting machine (I am using Cricut Explore Air 2)
- Your choice of vinyl
Instructions
Start with brainstorming your cake topper design. Pinterest is my go-to for inspiration. I searched Pinterest for a few 30th birthday key words and found so many options, it was hard to choose!
Once you have a rough idea of what you want, go into Cricut Design Space and create a new project. I will be going over instructions for cutting this project with the Cricut Explore Air 2 only.
Once you have created a new design project, type out your desired quote in the font you wish. I used Cricut Sans font and made sure the text was as bold as possible. Make sure you also have a rough estimate for the size of your cake first so you can compare how big you want your cake topper to be.
Now that you have your desired quote, you will then need to meld and attach the letters together so they touch. This is to keep the design in one piece and will be especially helpful when glueing to the wood dowels.
To meld the letters together first select all of your text. Just click on any of the letters as the entire text should be grouped together anyway.
Move your cursor to the layers tab in the top right corner of Cricut Design Space and choose ‘UnGroup’. This will ungroup all letters selected. We will be separating the letters and creating each letter as it’s own layer. From here you can individually move your letters to touch each other.
Once you are happy with your design and all letters are touching, you can weld your design together to create one cohesive design. To do this you should select every letter. An easy shortcut to ‘select all’ is to click your cursor somewhere outside of the letters and drag your cursor over every letter. Once every letter is selected, click on the ‘weld’ button in the bottom right. You have now successfully edited your design and prepared it for the next phase, cutting!
Make sure your design is set to ‘cut’ only. You can see this by checking the text next to your design. Next choose your desired material you wish to cut.
I chose to use card stock and gold vinyl I had laying around to create a glitzy cake topper. You can use any backing material you wish, but I think card stock is sturdy enough and easy to work with. I cut the card stock first and then layered the vinyl on top. Glued the wood dowel to the back and let sit overnight.
